The One Minute Manager

The One Minute Manager by Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson is indeed a guide to increase productivity, profits and prosperity.

There are three secrets to one minute Management:

I.ONE MINUTE GOAL SETTING: It is simply:
1. Agree on your goals.
2. See what good behaviour looks like.
3. Write out each of your goals on a single sheet of paper using less than 250 words.
4. Read and reread each goal, which requires only a minute or so each time you do it.
5. Take a minute every once in a while out of your day to look at your performance, and
6. See whether or not your behaviour matches your goal.

II.ONE MINUTE PRAISING: It works when you:
1. Tell people right from the start that you are going to let them know how they are doing.
2. Praise people immediately.
3. Tell people what they did right - be specific.
4. Tell people how good you feel about what they did right, and how it helps the organization and the other poeple who work there.
5. Stop for a moment of silence to let them 'feel' how good you feel.
6. Encourage them to do more of the same.
7. Shake hands or touch people in a way that makes it clear that you support their success in the organization.


It works because:
1. Praising is done as soon as you've done something right, and not wait for your performance review.
2. Since what is done right, is exactly specified, sincerety and familiarity is there.
3. There is consistency, even if things are not going well somewhere else.

The Key for training someone to do a new task is, in the beginning, to catch them doing something approximately right until they can eventually learn to do it exactly right.

III.ONE MINUTE REPRIMANDS: Just as one minute praising; but for the wrong, It works when, again the same 1-5 and 7. i.e 6 points, and then
7. Remind them how much you value them.
8. Reaffirm that you think well of them but not of their performance in this situation.
9. Realize that when the reprimand is over, it's over.

Behaviour and worth are not the same things. What is really worthwhile is the person managing their own behaviour. This is as true of each of us as managers as it is of each of the people we are managing.

Thus a one minute manager 'Let the people know right from the start what they are doing and why.'

Goals Begin Behaviours.
Consequences Maintain Behaviours.

Who would play football if there were no goals?

Remember: 'Feedback if the Breakfast of Champions.
Touch is very honest, 'When you touch, don't take, Touch the people you manage only when you are giving them something - reassurance, support, encouragement or whatever.


It is neither the autocratic or democratic managers, but effective managers, who manage themselves and the people they work with so that both the organisation and the people profit from their presence.


People who feel good about themselves Produce results.


Productivity is more than just the quantity of work done. It is also the quality.It is good for everyone to do well, and one need not go by the bell curve.



People are the most important resource.The best minute you spend is the one you invest in people.

Everyone is a Potential Winner
Some People are disguised as losers,
don't let their appearances fool you.
