These tales are characterized with fantasy and whimsical arrangement of plots. The story follows as under:
Shahryar, the king of India, executes his wife, getting enraged with her infidelity and waywardness. Thereafter, Shahryar determines to avenge all women indiscriminately. Now, he begins to have a girl each night only to be killed next morning. This goes on and on till there is no women left for him but for Shahrazad, the daughter of this Wazir, many women had run away from his kingdom for their lives. The Wazir, left with no option, has to give his daughter to the king.
Shahrazad, a beauty with brain, comes to know that the king is fond of enchanting stories. Then, there begins a series of stories told by her to the king every night. But every night she shrewdly keeps the climax of the story withheld. The king Shahryar who is highly desirous to know the climax, has to avoid killing her everyday. This continues for a thousand and one night till the king is no more revengeful. And in the meantime, three children are born to Shahrazad by him.
From fear of dying sprang the knack of narrating.
