In Case Of Fire

To prevent fires, it is helpful to remind ourselves of the fire tetrahedron that shows the four elements it takes to start and sustain a fire:

  • Oxygen
  • Combustible material
  • A source of ignition
  • Chain reaction; where the fire sustains itself by the constant production of heat

Take away any one of these to reduce the risk of a fire.

Fire extinguishers come in several types. Current standards (BS EN 3-7) state the colour of each extinguisher. All extinguishers are red with a colour coded area that denotes their type: Water, foam, carbondioxide, dry powder, wet chemical. It should be used only by an expert.

If you see or suspect a fire, don't hesitate or think about extinguishers: just sound the fire alarm immediately. Fires can spread rapidly, so reacting quickly can save lives.

Here's a reminder of some of the responsibilities when managing fire risks:

Reduce the supply of flammable substances and dispose of them safely

Be familiar with the location and basic operating procedures of fire safety equipment in case you need to use it

Sound the fire alarm immediately if you suspect a fire

Follow the evacuation plan without delay, and do not leave your assembly point.
