Cobalt Blue

Cobalt Blue  written and directed by Sachin Kundalkar adapted from the novel of the same name by him in Marathi, and translated into English by Jerry Pinto. It follows a story of a brother and sister who falls in love with the same man, ensuing events shatter a traditional Marathi family. Thanks for the available ebook, with the release of the movie, got hold of it, and did re-read it. Produced by Priya Sreedharan, Wasim Khan, Zulfaquar Torabi  enacted by Prateik Babbar as unnamed paying guest, Neelay Mehendale as Tanay Vidhyadhar Dixit, Anant V Joshi as Aseem Dixit, Anjali Sivaraman as Anuja Dixit, Poornima Indrajith as sister/nun, Neil Bhoopalam as Literature teacher, Geetanjali Kulkarni as Sharda Dixit, Shishir Sharma as Mr. Dixit, the movie is captivating. Though the book is based in Pune, the movie is in Fort Kochi, Cinematography by Vincenzo Condorelli is amazing.

A typical middle class Marathi family , an empty room with a separate entrance that once was the abode of the grandparents, where the smell of amritanjan still lingers. In comes an unconventional paying guest, changing the lives of two siblings, the younger son and the daughter of the family. Tanay is the non-favoured son in the Pune-based Joshi family. A quiet child, with a funny walk.

The book is in two parts , first one a sort of conversation where the brother Tanay talks to the protagonist, taking us through their relationship and how it ended. It takes the form of a direct address to the missing young man. This immediately presented a small but telling problem for the translator. Tanay uses ‘re’ constantly. It gives his monologue an intensity, a spontaneity and an affectionate intimacy that has no equal in English. Translator tried to use the word ‘love’ as a substitute (as in, ‘You would, wouldn’t you, love?’) but it was not equal in valency or intensity. Tanay says things again and again, as if he wants to reassure himself, as if repetition will fix what has happened in his memory. Once you get used to this, you realize that this is how we grieve, how we remember, in the present tense and in the past, all at once, because the imagined future must now be abandoned.

His life changes when PG steps into it. He spends most of his days, and nights, with him. When PG leaves, all he has of him are a few stray photos, clothes...a museum of broken things. He can’t share his grief, so it consumes him. In short, broken sentences, he conveys his feelings of loss, longing and betrayal.

It states:

We hit it off immediately; neither of us liked the kind of girl who would sing syrupy light classical music—bhav geet; nor the kind of boy who would wear banians with sleeves. There was another thing I didn’t like: marriage. And the many relatives who made it their business to discuss the subject ad nauseam.

You had no relatives. After I got to know you, I wanted to know every little detail about you. Where did you go to school? Did you ever fall in love? With whom? How do you manage alone? What do you plan on doing? I would ask a flurry of questions and I would volunteer a flurry of details about myself.

I don’t know how you managed it: an intense relationship with me, an attraction to Anuja, and then to leave with her? To live somewhere else?

No one would visit us because we’d be living together as social outcasts. For most of the day, we would do what we liked.

or the next two years, through your first two years of college, the bitterness had not abated. Everything around you seemed odd and false. All relationships seemed temporary.

In junior college, you had no friends. In your free time, your pursuits were solitary. You would sit in your hostel room reading for hours. Or you would go for long jogs; or have a meal alone in a restaurant. On Sunday, you’d climb a hill and paint. Or play the guitar.

We would both have liked this moment. We knew that it would be ours one day. But it is now mine alone.

Tanay dreams of living with PG, of being in a stable, monogamous relationship. “What do two men who decide to live together do?” he ponders. “Men who don’t have the old to look after or the young to raise. For most of the day we would do as we liked.”

It is interesting to see how two boys spending their time together is taken for granted. Tanay’s frequent visits and the long time that he spends in the guest’s room is never questioned, there is not an iota of doubt in his family’s minds. His angst at discovering that he is not inclined to the conventional manner of love, the casual relationships that he gets into and the lonely world that people of a different sexual orientation inhabits, is portrayed in a very matter of fact manner.

Some contradictions are quite interesting and is reflective of how we, as a society is changing, while trying not to change too much. Anuja is portrayed as a non-conventional girl, who goes on treks and rock climbing, volunteers for a pro-environment organization and the like. Her family seems to have accepted this about her. But, in the true Indian middle class  style, she is expected to stay away from the male paying guest.

The second part, as a story told by Anuja,  after she comes back from a six month long elopement with the same guy. The second half takes the shape of a diary that the sister writes. Now we see the same set of events from another position, another perspective. This often makes one’s heart ache; surely Anuja and Tanay could have talked? Surely, those years of growing up together in the same house should mean something? But perhaps they don’t; perhaps what really matters is the intensity of the time you spend together rather than the length of it. Anuja’s mourning is more visible. It takes the form of depression and crying bouts. Her monologue comprises entries in a diary that her psychiatrist tells her to maintain. Her section is more detailed. Anuja is a rebel. She has a few social skills. She suddenly takes off on treks and trips and volunteers with environmental organisations. She is the one who approaches the PG and asks him out. She doesn’t like the world of her mother’s religion and the cowardice of her father. Her love is no different from Tanay’s in its intensity.

Book - Realised smell is a matter of the mind , nothing is real. Some differences with the movie are:

Rashmi in the novel - is missing in the movie. Two days after Anuja returned, she was sent to a psychiatrist. She was sent to live with Sharayu Maushi for a change of scene. Rashmi took me into her care and managed to bring me back to my senses. It the movie it is the Nun, enacted beautifully by Purnima Indrajit.

'Are you the only one who wants to live differently? Those who choose to live differently must suffer the consequences. They must take the pain their decisions bring. Anyway, you’re still young. Why should you accept defeat?’

The results came out. I got 89 per cent. I was delighted. I had planned on an MSc in the same college, after which I planned a master’s degree in zoo management. I had no worries, no cares. When the holidays ended, I returned the Green Earth forms and my report. That year, they had decided to pay volunteers a stipend. Two thousand five hundred rupees! My first cheque! I was over the moon. I thought I’d take everyone out to dinner.

‘Can I ask him too?’ I asked my parents. ‘It won’t look nice, leaving him out.’

‘Okay,’ said Aai. I bounced off to ask him. Once again, he surprised me. ‘I’m not coming. We can go out on our own.’

After the family treat, I had four hundred rupees left. I said to Anubhav, ‘I’ve decided that I want to taste beer and see. I’ve also decided that I can’t do it alone. And I want to pay for it from my own earnings.’ He was more than ready to come with me. On the way home from the beer bar, I felt light and happy. It seemed a wonder that I’d never drunk such a great thing before. I felt a great liquid love for the world surge through me.

That left two hundred rupees. Aai said, ‘Give me that passbook. I’ll put it in the locker with the others.’ And so ended my spree.

Why do we judge relationships only by their age? Why is it that only a long- lasting relationship may be called successful? Now I no longer feel like weeping over him. I just want to meet him once, to ask him why. Then I look at Anubhav and I think: what explanation? From whom? What will I gain by holding him responsible? So maybe it’s all for the best if he doesn’t show up.

At seven that evening, Tanay called from Mumbai. I answered the phone. He had arrived safely. He was at the address he had scribbled on the notepad. He said, ‘Because it’s you, I’m saying this. I won’t be coming for any engagement shit. Rehearsals start tomorrow. And I have to find a job.’

As he was speaking, it seemed like he had received a jolt and he began to talk to someone in English. I told him about the interview at Green Earth. He wished me and hung up. As I was going into my room, Aseem said, ‘When Supriya and her folks are around, could you please wear salwar kameez? For my sake. Until the wedding is over.’

I was struck by its simplicity, symmetry and daring. Its basic story is simple: a young man arrives as a paying guest and catalyses the lives of two siblings: a brother and sister. Kundalkar’s telling of it is likewise simple.

Movie is a mix of Malayalam, English, Hindi and Marathi.

Author’s dedication is For Umesh, while Translator’s dedication is 'To boatmen of every kind'.

What makes the story interesting is how each relationship builds, without either of them knowing the other part. One is left to wonder in between what sort of guy the painter is. He is introduced as a loner, with no close friends or relatives, living pretty much on his own very stereotypical guy – unconventional, brooding, aloof, very religious about his space and discipline. From the beginning he seemed attraction worthy he enjoyed the best of two diverse worlds and was cunning enough to keep his different shades completely compartmental and separate. The paying guest (PG) has no name or surname and no past. He is a man who lives by his own idiosyncrasies, a seeker who follows no rules. He likes Matisse, Rumi, Dali, rice pancakes, strong coffee, black and white photographs and Coke with a pinch of salt. He paints and plays the guitar. Being alone is a habit for him. The only thing that is known about his family is that his father was a consultant with the Indian embassy in Paris and that his uncle molested him when he was a child. There’s a lot you learn about the guest and yet, a lot you don’t know. Most of you know comes through Tanay’s narrative.

The writer has sensitively handles the topic of bisexuality, homosexuality and young adult fantasies but felt like it ended abruptly. For a book that was originally written in 2006, Cobalt Blue is ahead of its time. But the movie did raise few questions, though was an initial hit in Netflix.

9 Changes to Lead a Happy and Successful Life - Blair Singer

Nothing good comes from waiting. In order to lead a happy and successful life, you have to make changes. And… You have to make them yourself.  Here are 9 changes you can make to answer the question “Where do we go from here?”

1. Stop Waiting

If you want a happy and successful life, you have to take action now. That means, take initiative and get in control of your own destiny. Don’t ever put your life in the hands of someone else – keep a firm grip on your own steering wheel.

2. Value Connection

During the pandemic, I learned along with millions of others that connection is priceless. No matter the form, you have to learn how to connect with others. If you don’t have people to connect with, use tip number one – take initiative and create a group.

3. Create A Community

Your team is your number-one asset, and it’s easy to create a community these days on social media – even if it’s just 20 – 30 people that follow you. That community will become your tribe, and that tribe will become your customers.

For some reason people seem to feel down and out when they have 20-30 followers, or just a few people on a live cast.  Imagine speaking in front of a room of 20-30 of your most interested fans to put it into perspective.  That’s how you beat your Little Voice.

4. Keep an Eye on Your Health

Your health is your responsibility, and you have the ability to manage it and make your body as strong as you possibly can. It’s hard work, but it’s worth it – you’ll lead a long, happy life and feel better about yourself along the way.

5. Keep an Eye on Your Wealth

Get your financial education and stay committed to your financial well-being. Don’t push the responsibility off on someone else, because it’s yours alone to take care of.

6. Be Vigilant

Watch what’s going on around you and look at the big picture. Keep your head on a swivel. Make judgments based on your own truth without depending on what others say and do.

Own your decisions… and remember to take action.

7. Unify People

This isn’t a skill that’s taught in school – you’re going to have to learn through trial and error. It’s not easy, but a unifying leader will encourage people to bring people together with a common goal and a common vision.

8. Eliminate Uncertainty

All problems can be solved. If you’re confused and worried, those feelings are going to block out your vision. Eliminate the fear and uncertainty that surrounds decision-making. If you work through your uncertainty, all sorts of opportunities will present themselves.

9. Know Your Brand

Your brand is what you deliver on a constant basis, and it’s how you create a successful future. You don’t need a ton of people to create one, but you do need a reliable team. If you don’t have a team, join one that shares your same values.

If you put these pieces together, you can create the best of times.

Keep in mind, your business is a journey. Part of that journey is allowing your market or audience the opportunity to know, like, and trust you.

Be Awesome!

Earth Day

You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you.

Did you know that being in touch with soil can increase your happiness quotient? Today, there are several scientific studies that have proven that contact with soil can have tremendous benefits in terms of your physical and mental health.

Many of us have fond memories of playing in soil as children. But very few of us can claim to have kept our connection with soil as adults. If you are one of them, this Earth Day is a fantastic opportunity to revisit those memories with a fun activity.

Here are a few ideas for you to explore:

🌱 Create a sculpture from soil

🌱 Immerse your hands in soil

🌱 Dance barefoot to celebrate soil

🌱 Paint your face with soil

🌱 Show the world how much fun it can be to connect with soil. Post your photos and videos on social media platforms on 22 April using #MyConnectWithSoil

We hope this Earth Day is a reminder to nurture your connection with soil, not just on this one day but every day of your life.

An Isha Volunteers initiative.

Communication

We often hear that there are two parts to the communication viz.

  • Speaking
  • Listening
But the story don't end there, the most important is understanding and closing the loop.

Today the story is different because, we use technology to communicate. The tit bits of looking people in their eyes, etc. has little relevance when we use technology.  In today’s world, people are glued to their devices.  You need to meet them where they are, where they spend their time.

These days, people want to have a conversation, to connect.  They want to know that the person who’s dealing with them cares about them and has their back.  Genuinely.

At times, we do not care for the person next to us, and is up and around making up lives of those miles away.

The whole formula of how we deal with people has evolved, morphed, and changed.

How does it affect you as a leader?   As a business owner? Or business professional?

As a leader, whether it’s your own business or the world, you’ve got to know how to communicate one to many. Why?   Because our interactions have adjusted and we don’t go out as much, making it hard to talk to big groups of people.  And you can’t talk to one after another, after another, you must understand the technology, be able to talk one to one and be able to lead one to many.

The other thing is this, communication that works is based on authenticity.  In other words, no more promises. People are sick of promises. They’ve been promised so much, and they know those promises are not steeped in reality. People don’t know who to believe.

And that’s why the third component is you must learn how to teach, how to be a great teacher.  Particularly if you have a business (or have kids) it’s important to be able to teach, teach what’s really true.  You can’t always believe what you’re watching on TV or social media.  You can’t always believe what’s going on in this crazy world, or even what’s taught in school.  So, who does that leave?  Life is a lesson, life is a school, business is a school filled with lessons.

So, who’s the teacher?

You & Me!

We!

If you’re going to be a leader.  Your communication and the way you communicate has changed quite a bit. It’s not about promising the future and inspiring people to be the best they can be. I mean, there will always be part of that, but it’s ego less. It’s understanding little voices. It’s about making it safe for people to work with you. It’s about not making promises, by talking one to many, being real, being authentic and teaching people how to empower themselves.

Now this is a broad overview, but communication has changed. If you understand these things or are just being aware of them, you will notice a few things. You’ll notice that the rapport you build with people, whether it’s at home, at work, out in the community; whether it’s sales, marketing, whatever.  It’s changed. So please don’t be left behind by the change.

This time has taught us how to connect better. It’s taught us the power and the importance of connection. And it’s also taught us how easily people get confused and distracted. Be a great leader that can give focus, co-create, and architect the future.  Do this rather than allowing people to be victims of the future.

Nobody’s looking for promises anymore.  What people want to know is what is our future? How do we create it? How do we work together on this? How do I have some buy in it? Give me the dignity, the respect to show that I have something to offer…Let me contribute.

Most importantly, manage the little voice.  The little voice in your head, because as Napoleon Hill says, that fear, which pervades our business and personal lives is rampant in the world today.  Fear runs amuck, there are around 8 billion people out there. Fear of poverty, fear of loss of income, fear of illness, fear of death, fear of criticism.  Franklin D Roosevelt said, “the only fear we have, is fear itself.” Now why did he say that during the great depression? He said that because economic strife is one thing that we can all get through. But when people panic and the fear comes up, the intelligence goes down.  People tend to people fight with each other, and they get depressed. And then, they don’t have the mental attitude, the resourcefulness, the resilience.   The Little Voice is the biggest one of all in your life, in your family, and in all your business dealings. If you can be the person that replaces fear with courage, then there’s hope.

If you want to be a great communicator, hopefully you’ll follow this formula.

Be an amazing communicator starting right now.

Soil is the basis of our lives. But...Agriculture, deforestation, and other factors have degraded and eroded topsoil at alarming rates. Globally, 52% of agricultural land is already degraded. The planet is in crisis. If current rates of soil degradation continue, this would be the end of life as we know it.

Magic Of Soil

“The Only Magic Material that Turns Death into Life.”

– SADHGURU

The Save Soil movement is about bringing humanity together to keep the magic of soil alive.

THE SOIL SONG

Most of us are familiar with words and concepts such as Climate Change, Carbon Emissions, Air Pollution and Water Scarcity, but very few have focused attention on Soil. For millennia, life on earth has been sustained by a thin layer of fertile soil on the earth's crust.

But...

What exactly is soil and what does it do?

LET US EXPLORE THROUGH A QUIZ BELOW.

QUESTION 1 / 6

Soil: A holistic solution

Almost every major ecological crisis is, to some degree or form, a consequence or symptom of the degradation of soil. Similarly, almost every environmental or environment-related pain point can be addressed by creating healthy soil.

It is, in fact, a fallacy to think we can address any one aspect of our environment without addressing the whole, because no aspect of the ecosystem functions in isolation. No solution is complete until we become conscious that life is one single complex phenomenon, all of which is happening in unison. In many ways, Soil is the underlying platform upon which life springs forth. If we fix soil, we have the best chance of fixing the whole.

Oh Soil

The fragrance of the soil

Somehow is more tenderness to me

than the fancy fragrance of the flower

The strength and sensitivity of life

held in the soil

lets off waves of passion of a

different sort.

Passion not of a person

but of my species

that has gone insensitive

to all that nurtures it

and absorbs it at its end.

As I walk barefoot, I break down

with Passions so profound

that it defies all descriptions.

Oh' Soil, My life

POEM BY SADHGURU

2018 - Save River - Ride in India - Sadhguru launched Rally for Rivers on September 3, 2017 to revitalize India's rapidly depleting river, drove 9,300 kilometers in thirty days. During that time, spoke at 142 events along the way and gave over 180 interviews.

While Rally for Rivers was an awareness project to change the law, Waghari was a hands-on project. Cauvery Calling was in between. In scope, Cauvery Calling was much larger than Waghari because in Cauvery Calling, it was an exercise between the government, the farmers and people.

2019 - Save Trees

Sadhguru bats for one trillion trees campaign at WEF 2020 summit. Sadhguru has launched pathbreaking ecological initiatives in India including award-winning projects such as Project GreenHands (PGH) and Rally for Rivers (RfR) – both of which promote tree plantation. In a bid to revitalise the river, the Sadhguru's Cauvery Calling project aims to support farmers to plant 242 crore trees through agroforestry.

Bheeshma Parvam

Produced, directed and co-written by Amal Neerad, with screen writing support from Devadath Shaji and Ravishanker , with additional dialogues by Mano Jose; "Bheeshma Parvam" is an excellent retelling of Mahabharatha in a "Godfather" style with local flavour  the setting being 80's Kochi. The 80's have been wonderfully recreated; the way of life, music, fashion, movie - all of these have been captured well with autos and cars of that period, 13AD Band, bellbottoms, ads then  all nostalgic for people who have lived during that time period.

(L to R) Ravi Shankar, Amal Neeerad, Devadath, Mammootty, Mano Jose, Anend C Chandran (Cinematographer).

Performance by an ensemble cast led by the Megastar Mammotty as Michael Anjootti the patriarch of the Anjootti family, the Bheeshma is outstanding.

Varkey Anjootti and Annamma Anjootti are a respected couple in Kochi. They have five children:

  • Paily, the oldest of the five, who is now dead, was married to Fathima and Fathima remarries Ali, a close aide of the Anjootti family, and has 2 children, Ajas and Ami.
  • Mathai, the second oldest of the five, is married to Molly and has 2 children, Peter and Paul.
  • Michael, the third oldest of the five, is not married.
  • Simon, the fourth oldest of the five, became a priest.
  • Susan, the youngest of the five, is married to Martin and has 2 children, Able and Rachel.

It also includes Michael’s loyalists Mani and Sivankutty, Michael’s girlfriend Alice, and the Kocheri family, who are hostile to the Family. Majeed was Varkey’s best friend. Ali is Majeed’s son and Madhavan’s wife’s name is Rema.

The house shown in the movie, where they stay is nearly around 135 years old traditional home, known as  Villa de Parrai, which is situated at Ezhupunna near Cherthala in Alappuzha district, with 8th generation of the family now owning it.

In 1988 Kochi, at the birthday of his grand-nephew, Michael, the Don of the Anjootti family who takes over the family after the death of the Anjootti family's eldest son, Paily, as the second son, Mathai was an idler. Elsa, whose boyfriend was being set on fire by her family and Pauly, the boyfriend's mother seek Michael's help for an act of revenge. Shivankutty, the right-hand man of Michael, beats Elsa's family as per the instruction of Michael. The whole family of Anjootti family comes together for the birthday of Peter's kid and a family photograph.

Much to the chagrin and dislike of his nephews - Peter (Shine Tom Chacko) and Paul (Farhaan Fazil), their uncle T V James, MP (Dileesh Pothen) as well as Micheal's younger brother - Father Simon (Jinu Joseph) the family is led by an iron - fisted Micheal (Mammootty). Like Bheeshma, Micheal controls the proceedings from the hospital bed and let the youngsters take center stage, after revealing in the first half, that he cannot be killed, until he wills,  justifies its title. Michael shows a lot of concern towards Fatima (Nadiya Moidu) - his dead brother's wife and her sons from a second marriage - Ajaz (Soubin Shahir) and Ami (Srinath Bhasi).

Ami falls for Rachel (Anagha), the daughter of Susan (Lena). How this relationship creates chaos within the family and how Rajan Madhavan Nair (Sudev Nair) joins the fray to take revenge on Micheal, is what the rest of the narrative is all about. This is also the swansong of KPAC Lalitha and Nedumudi Venu as Rajan's grandparents, frail yet amazing evoking emotions and memories now that they are no more.

Switch on for the movie was by Nazriya and Jyothirmayi.

And there is a big family behind the scene too.

And has made many families get back to the cinema, with a mini India with present day diversity and conflicts including politics and religion indeed proving, Mahabharata has everything in it.
