All in a family - Including Politics

Indian politics is a complex game of snake and ladder which involves making friends and enemies time to time and when family members are involved in different parties, it is all the more interesting with debates and discussions going in all the directions.

Freedom to chose whichever ideology suits you is the beauty of Indian democracy. The ideologies in Indian politics, if taken to extreme levels, called extremism, can lead to civil wars and unrest which is the way things appear to be moving. Opposition in Indian politics plays an important rule in keeping democratic values such as debates and dissent alive in India. Without any opposition, the government will go unchecked and the country might turn into a fascist regime. India is the largest democracy in the world, and let us exercise our right until it last. The General  to Local Self Government is scheduled in three phases across districts in Kerala.

Greed, hate and corruption are all part of Indian democracy since the birth of the Republic of India .

Politicians usually choose their parties, not because they believe in the ideologies of the party, but because of the winnability quotient in the elections. Elections, unfortunately, is all about money power and muscle power. The ideologies and promises are just the sugar coating that politician do to get votes from people. But even if they follow the ideology of a party, the ideologies itself is flawed and broken from its core. Divide and rule policy followed by the British to rule India is followed by today’s politicians to get votes. Political parties, across the spectrum, try to divide people of India on the basis of religions and class. This is usually called by the term communal polarisation. The gullible voters play into the hands of these political parties and belive the fancy promises they show in the name of development. In a good democratic system, a common man should also be well aware of their rights and responsibilities as a law-abiding citizen.

Right vs Wrong, Left vs Right, Liberal vs Conservative, Us vs Them — partisanship impacts our discourse every day, more so in these times of rampant tribalism. But are our political views rational or intuitive? Emotional reactions or calculated responses? How did we, a slightly advanced breed of chimp, glean obscure concepts such as morality? From what age do we let bias (conscious or otherwise) seep into our psyche?

Waiting to get hold of Jonathan Haidt’s “The Righteous Mind: Why good people are divided by politics and religion”.  Haidt provides an evidence-based, experiment-backed, rigorously researched treatise of these in “The Righteous Mind”. He attempts to convince us, through multiple experiments, that we are essentially intuition-driven information processors, constantly scanning the world around us, morally interpreting information and coloring narratives with our unique worldview.
