The long-awaited dream of having a bookstore in Kakkanad became a reality with the inauguration of Mathrubhumi's new bookstore near the old driving test ground, adjacent to the Kakkanad Collectorate, at Civil Lane Bypass road, on April 30, 2025. For book lovers, especially those in nearby areas who have craved such a space during book exchanges or while hunting for meaningful gifts, this was a moment of deep personal joy and fulfillment. The event was not only about books but also about connecting with the literary soul of the region.
Eminent personalities graced the event, adding to its significance. Renowned writer and activist Sarah Joseph stressed the need for public spaces that uphold democratic dialogue and resist social injustice. Priya A.S., acclaimed translator and author, shared insights into the art of literary translation and her work based on Kerala's 2018 floods. Mithun Chittilapilly, businessman and author, spoke about the role of reading and storytelling in leadership and business innovation. Joseph Annamkutty Jose, radio jockey and motivational author, highlighted the transformative power of personal storytelling. He asked the audience to get inside the bookstore and buy a book. He is happy to see someone pick his book, but is sad to see that these days, people click a selfie with it and keep back the book. Akhil Dharmarajan, a rising literary voice, said though he was afraid of public speaking was glad to be in the company of people like Sarah Joseph and Priya and that they recognise and know him.
Mathrubhumi’s initiative reflects the cultural heartbeat of Kakkanad—a region that cherishes letters and literature. This bookstore is more than a commercial space; it is a sanctuary for those who seek comfort in words, they are planning to have authors come and speak on Fridays. We have space in there to sit and read too. It stands as a tribute to a community deeply rooted in literary tradition and yearning for meaningful dialogue.
