BMC and Covid Management

Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal was guest at ThePrint’s latest Off The Cuff. In a conversation with Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta, Chahal spoke about the various systems that the Mumbai civic body put in place to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. Mr. Gupta didn’t interject Chahal sir once. That’s the decorum and respect this man deserves for his efforts, and those who are invited for discussions.

Chahal discussed how he abolished the central control room in the thick of the pandemic and set up 24 ward-level war rooms, adopted a ‘Chase the Virus’ and ‘Chase the Patient’ policy and developed dashboards for hospital beds and crematoria.

He said Mumbai’s private healthcare sector has wholeheartedly supported the civic body, surrendering 80 per cent of their beds even at a collective loss of Rs 700 crore.

Chahal also discussed Mumbai’s preparedness for the third phase of the Covid vaccination drive and plans for developing hospital infrastructure in the event of a third wave. Looks like we finally have a BMC head who is modern and refreshingly innovative in his approach. Mr Chahal will be  celeberated as a our saviour and superstar. This is what you call - looking after you’re people!!! What every government official should be doing in India! Ward war room, decentralized cases, as single control room cannot attend all the case, Evangelist for Vaccine program, Eyeball to eyeball contact with fellow coworkers and "chase the virus" were his few key inputs.

Vile Parle police station in Mumbai seized 4.75 crores worth of Remdesivir vials that were being secretly moved by a Gujarat company.

Suddenly, @Dev_Fadnavis shows up at the police station on 18th April night and said BJP ordered those vials from Daman & Gujarat.

Fadnavis then claims that the BJP bought that stock to distribute to people.

1. How did a private individual like Fadnavis procure Remdesivir stock from Gujarat when sale is allowed only to the government?

2. Why didn’t Fadnavis inform the state govt of the supplier & help procure the stock through state channels?

3. In the midst of a severe shortage, why was BJP hoarding 4.75 crores worth of Remdesivir in their party office (just like in Gujarat)?

And most importantly - while @nawabmalikncp ji showed  that Central govt had stopped supplies of Remdesivir to Maharashtra govt, then how was BJP’s Fadnavis allowed to procure it sneakily without informing the state govt? That too stock worth 4.75 crores?

It’s shameful that the Modi govt is throttling supplies of Remdesivir to Maharashtra Govt while sneakily allowing Fadnavis & BJP to distribute it through their party office.

This is politics of the filthiest kind where BJP is playing with lives of innocent people.

Fadnavis in collusion with the Modi Govt is starving Maharashtra of Remdesivir supplies while hoarding them in BJP offices.
