Mental health is often associated with significant stigma, even being regarded as a taboo topic in many communities. To break the stigma, we are hosting the Taboo wellness workshop.
What is a Taboo?
Taboo is a fun word guessing game. The objective of the game is to guess the word without using the term directly. In this activity, we aim to create awareness around the stigma surrounding mental health.
The session will be hosted by Joana Ann Mathews, Wellness Coach at Silver Oak Health.
Stigma and Taboo refers to:
- The culture
- The Prejudice
- Lack of awareness
- Create right Atmosphere
- Stigma: A set of negative beliefs/opinion which make it difficult to be open towards something. Stereotype, prejudice, lack of awareness, shame.
- Depression: Low, sad, illness, feeling blue. It's over a period of time. Started feeling differently.
- Counselling: Talking therapy. Difference from advise seeking.
- OCD: Obsession, anxiety, compulsion.
- Eating disorder: picky eaters, spoilt, weight gain or loss, weak.
- Sexual Eduaction: Netflix series, biology, puberty,
- Self priority: Selfish, put your own oxygen mask, self love
Summary:
- To limit the common notions surrounding these words and create an experience, of sharing which better comprehends the characteristics feelings/behaviors associated with the event
- To create an empathetic understanding of these experiences and be able to help/support a person better
- To have conversations around mental health, on the individual, community and the organization front.
- Sharing opinions and resources to create a rational and accurate understanding of the topics.
- Normalizing seeking help.
